Luffy was a kid in a bar in an island called Dawn Island. His dad Monkey D. Dragon left him in the bar because Dragon was the leader of the revolutionary army he's dad was a very strong. Luffy grew up on Dawn Island and his grandfather a marine hero Garp. He also had a pirate friend name Shanks who lead the red haired pirates, Shanks inspired Luffy to be a pirate.
